Key result
In 1,182 multiparous Nellore cows on two farms in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, conception rate at first-service FTAI was 57.7% in the treated group (n = 586) versus 50.8% in controls (n = 596), p = 0.02. The logistic regression gave an odds ratio of 1.30 (95% CI 1.03–1.67; p = 0.02). Mean body condition score was 3.03 ± 0.37 and did not differ between groups (p = 0.23). The benefit was uniform across every variable evaluated: all treatment interactions with farm, estrus expression, sire and body condition score were non-significant (p = 0.96, 0.63, 0.73 and 0.98 respectively).
Animals were injected at the start of the synchronisation protocol with a solution containing Zn 60 mg/mL, Cu 15 mg/mL, Mn 10 mg/mL and Se 5 mg/mL, at 1 mL/100 kg body weight, subcutaneously.
Conclusions
Administration of injectable trace minerals (Zn, Cu, Mn and Se) at the beginning of a synchronization protocol significantly increased conception rates in multiparous Nellore cows submitted to FTAI.
