Lactipro®
About this platform
A newborn calf is functionally a monogastric. It becomes a ruminant over the first weeks of life, and how quickly that happens sets the ceiling on how much solid feed it can convert. Volatile fatty acids drive that development — butyrate in particular, which stimulates the growth of ruminal papillae and so the absorptive surface of the rumen.
Megasphaera elsdenii is a lactate-utilising, butyrate-producing organism native to the mature rumen. Strain NCIMB 41125 is the one used in Lactipro®, delivered as a single oral capsule rather than a daily feed additive. The rationale is to seed the organism before the calf is challenged by a rapid increase in starter or a feed transition, when lactate can otherwise accumulate.
This library collects the conference posters behind that work. Today it covers growth, health and survival in dairy calves under commercial conditions. It does not yet cover feedlot transitions, rumen pH measurements or dose-response work; those studies exist in the wider literature but are not published here.
LactiproFLX® is a direct-fed microbial, not a prescription medicine. Availability, registration and the claims that may be made differ between markets: follow the label approved in yours.

Effects of a Megasphaera elsdenii NCIMB 41125 oral capsule on growth performance, health and survival in Holstein calves
748 Holstein calves in one commercial herd. A single LactiproFLX® capsule was associated with higher ADG birth-to-weaning (0.642 vs 0.614 kg/d; p=0.01) and birth-to-end-of-post-weaning (0.773 vs 0.746 kg/d; p=0.02). Control calves had a 3.26 times higher hazard of dying or being sold for beef (hazard ratio 3.26; 95% CI 1.61–6.60; p<0.001) — about 91% vs 97% survival to day 120. ADG over the weaning-to-end window alone (p=0.18) and disease rates (p>0.2) did not reach significance. Guadagnini et al. · ADSA 2026 · Uruguay · PDF 4.2 MB Read abstractPapers
